Google Ads piss you off?

Post by Davespages on Sat Mar 08, 2008 2:32 pm

I have found a way to get rid of them once and for all.

Even on this free temp forum we have google ads..

You may have seen the URL in the bottom left hand bar of your browser... pagead2.googlesyndication.com

It one of many ad servers by google and the fooking adverts are everywhere, pop ups, embedded objects in java and even basic html iframes within pages.

You cant block the domain googlesynication.com as the domain used by ads is pagead2.googlesyndication.com and this (using the . in the middle of a two part domain) is called a wildcard... it means it can search several servers if one is busy/blocked or down.

The best way is to stop the domain with wildcards from loading... Blocking wont work because as said... wildcards will search for another server to load from.

TELL internet explorer/firefox the I.P address of the wildcard'd domain and its sorted.

Anyone heard of the Hosts file?

Well the hosts file is a list of I.P addresses and domains that windows makes... your browser will always consult this before resolving the i.p address for the requested url by DNS.

So if you were to give the pagead2.googlesyndication.com a false address, then the browser wouldn;t load the adverts!

If you have XP..

c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\

Then open the "hosts" file (it has no extension)

It should have text at the top, every line will start with a # and end with a #
Windows ignores the text inside the #

The only text not inserted between two # will be..

127.0.0.1 localhost

----------------------

Now to block the google ads crap.. simply add this one line...

127.0.0.1 pagead2.googlesynication.com #[blocks google ads]#

Save the file (if it will allow...)

If it wont, save it as a txt file in the directory drivers\etc... and restart to safe mode.

Then open the hosts file, copy the line in and save.

Restart.

In future when a page try;s to load google ads, it will merely display "internet explorer cannopt display this page" message, no silly flash or ads... just a simple error page.
This is because the hosts file says 127.0.0.1 is your pc (localhost) and we told the browsers to load google ads from the local host (your pc) and not from the google add servers.

Now this can be used to get rid of lots of adware and banners.

Below is a list (freely available) of add servers around the world, and servers that host malicious trojans/spyware.
It will block access to all of them.

Download my copy of my hosts file...

http://www.davespages.co.uk/hosts.txt

Copy that into your hosts file.. (ommitting the initial "127.0.0.1 local host" entry)
DONT REPLACE PLACE your host file as there may be some specific addresses in there which will be important...

If there are entries in there that you are unsure off... post them up and i'll tell you if its legit or malicious..

Beware... malicious trojans/virus sometimes modify this file... and block antivirus websites... which frustrates the average joe pc user.

Very Happy

Thats pretty useful. I find the msn messenger ones more annoying, popping up whenever you roll over them. Apparently theres a similar one for those aswell

Well as crap as IE is, i'm migrating to firefox... its FREE and far superior.

Theres as pluggin called ad block, that after two block requests will permanently block traffic (adverts/flash/images) from an add server.

It stops pop ups and silly overlay advertising on pages.
